1. Silas will become familiar with repeated words like "God."
2. Silas will learn the habit of sitting still and listening.
3. Since we don't know exactly when he'll start to pick up on simple truths, we figure better start early rather than miss it.
4. Silas will already associate family devotions as quality time with Mom and Dad. We want this to be something he looks forward to and enjoys, and that is definitely true even after one week.
So yes, we started this past week. Right now all devotions consist of are reading a Bible story with an occasional prayer or song thrown in. Eventually, we hope to incorporate all three of those elements every time. We have two children's Bible we LOVE and highly recommend.
The Big Picture Story Bible

We like this one because it uses a continuous story line, emphasizing God's big plan and purpose of salvation throughout all of Scripture. The simplicity and great illustrations make this a great choice for little ones.

Okay, this one made me cry the first time I read it to Silas; I couldn't even finish the story. A little wordier than the Big Picture Bible, but SO well written! This one's title states its purpose- to explain how every part of Scripture points to Christ.
And here are some pictures of little Silas enjoying family devotions this week:
I completely agree! I read Megan things during the day, and we say a prayer every night before bed. We're planning on starting family devotions as well as her nighttime prayers in a couple months. I don't think you can start too early. :)
ReplyDeleteOh Jessica,
ReplyDeleteI love your comments, thoughtful planning, and the pictures! Both Silas and his daddy look pretty pleased. What great guys!
Mom
We also have the Jesus Storybook Bible and LOVE it! The first story I read to Jerek out of it was Noah's Ark and I cried like a baby. The way it is written is beautiful and really shows how Jesus is the central theme throughout the entire Bible, a concept that is near and dear to my heart having spent so many years in a Messianic Synagogue. I hope that your time reading the word together as a family is just as meaningful and precious as it has been for us. Good for you to start early, although it is never too early. I read Noah's Ark to him when he was 4 weeks old. . . .
