12 month ped report

Bleh.  The past three times we've gone to the pediatrician, we've had to wait over an hour before seeing the doctor.  Is this normal?  I'm getting sort of frustrated.

It was a pretty routine visit.  Nothing earth-shattering to report.

Weight: 19lbs 10oz
Length: 29 1/2 inches

One thing that was sort of disconcerting...Silas had lost 8oz or so since our visit a couple of weeks ago.  I'm pretty convinced it's because I've almost weaned him, and his milk intake is drastically lower.  He drinks from a sippy pretty well (never did the bottle, unfortunately), but he just seems disinterested in it and will only drink a little bit before he's pushing it away, throwing it on the floor, banging it on a table, etc.

So right now he's getting one nursing session in the morning, then drinking about half to two-thirds of a sippy cup throughout the day.

This just doesn't seem like enough to me!

The doctor isn't concerned about it; she said he'll drink when he's thirsty and I shouldn't stress about it.  She said there's no reason to push juice or anything like that.  I think I would have believed her if he hadn't been losing weight.

What's the solution?  He IS doing a little bit better with the sippy (today he drank a whole cup), and I'm trying to feed him a little bit more at each meal to make up for lost calories.  Anybody have other advice?

Side note: Silas is doing a little bit better with table food!  He's still a slow chewer, but he's finally putting things in his mouth.  Although whether or not the food stays in his mouth is another story. :)

  1. One of my friends told me her son's pediatrician recommended adding flavoring to the milk to get him to drink it (like chocolate or strawberry). She said it worked - he started really wanting the milk, and then gradually they phased out the flavoring so now he's drinking plain milk. I'm not sure how you feel about something like that -- I'm not even sure how I feel, but it's an idea for you :-)

  2. That's a really helpful idea, Dava! Wonder where to find that kind of flavoring..?

  3. Jerek would NEVER take the whole milk, so we switched to 2%. He would only drink a little and then throw the cup. I had to stop nursing at 9 months, so he had been drinking formula, so we mixed the formula with the 2% and eventually phased it out. I don't know how well that would work for you, adding formula, but maybe you could mix your milk with the regular milk to help with taste?

Do you still make your own food? You could always use your milk, or regular milk, to help thin it down if you are worried about his calorie intake. It would beef up the calories, but you might lose some of the nutrients from the water you cooked the food in.

It is really all trial and error, lots of prayer, and lots of Mommy instinct! Jerek hasn't gained any weight in the last 9 months. He has gotten taller, but no weight gain. I am right now praying about if I need to take him to the pedi. I only take him when really necessary, so we'll see. I'll pray for you, too!

  4. Erin, thanks for your helpful comments! Unfortunately, I don't think I'm making enough milk anymore to mix with the whole milk...Someone just told me about Carnation Breakfast; I may start mixing that in since it's sweet but really nutritious.

I do make my own food, and that's a great idea to use milk! I think it's probably worth the loss of veggie nutrients if I can add the rich fat and nutrients from the dairy. We'll see.

I hear of toddlers staying the same weight for a really long time...I bet it's not unusual to go 9 months without gaining. If he's growing taller, that's a good sign, right? :)

  5. Asher lost 4 pounds between his January ped visit and his pink eye urgent care visit this past Saturday. Kids are just such picky eaters! The doctor told me the same thing yours did - if he's thirsty, he'll ask for a drink; if he's hungry, he'll eat. So no worries... Silas will grow up to be big and strong :) And thanks for the phone call the other day - I will call you back when things slow down a little bit! :)

  6. Jess, I'm not sure if Silas is still having trouble with the sippy cup, but I got some other advice I wanted to pass on to you... Simeon never wants the sippy cup, but he loves drinking out of our glasses. So, on the advice of a nurse, we started giving him drinks out of a shot glass! He loves it - it's the perfect size for his little hands, and he can actually see what he's drinking and do it just like we do. I can't fill the thing fast enough!
