repurposed door = new bookshelves!

My husband is a book addict.  This is not unusual for seminarians...he just can't seem to get enough reading material to satisfy his greedy appetite.  This was a bit of a space issue before, and now that he's getting tons of books for every semester it's getting a little ridiculous.  We have 4 full-sized bookshelves crammed into our tiny apartment (not counting the one in Silas' room, which would make 5).  But this just wasn't enough space...so we got creative.  I wanted to get some wall shelves to put in our dining area, but it was really difficult to find wall shelves sturdy enough to hold books.

My sister-in-law, Liz, raved about this guy in Greenville who made her a customized wooden piece to hold her art/fabric supplies.  Since we were going to visit them in Greenville in August, I decided to hire the same guy to make shelves for us.

Seth Withers of UpCountry Woodshop in Travelers Rest, SC is a genius.  I rambled on about my ideas but I have no idea how he managed to come up with EXACTLY what I was looking for.  He was incredibly easy to work with and very reasonable with his prices.  When we went to go pick up the shelves, Seth greeted us with a warm handshake and a pleasant Southern drawl.  The shelves are actually made out of an old door he found, which makes them even cooler in my opinion.  Take a look.

I LOVE the look of the raw, salvaged wood!  The detail on this door was phenomenal; what a find!  It goes perfectly with our table, which is made out of barn rafters.

See how I am proudly displaying my yard sale camera and fan?  That is just an IBC root beer bottle next to the fan.  I like the idea of combining old (camera, black & white photo, fan) and modern pieces (vases, Pier One ball) to create an eclectic, textured look.

And I'm happy to report that there is now PLENTY of room for more books!  I think these shelves should take us through seminary...whew.

  2. Totally a fan of these bookshelves, Jess! If the guy lived here, I think I might have him make us some! :-)
