As Nathan will tell you, I am constantly lamenting the fact that I didn't study something more "interesting" in college. Choosing to be an El Ed major was certainly practical, but let's just say I wasn't quite as bonkers about bulletin boards, learning centers, and classroom management plans as some of my Ms. Frizzle-ish classmates.
If I could go back in time, what would I choose to study? Literature? Music? Bible? I have mused over this questions for hours. For really no good purpose, since I will probably never be in a place where I can continue my education. (Don't get me wrong...I'm not regretting my choice to be a young mommy. I wouldn't trade it for anything.)
One thing that has somewhat satisfied my craving for learning has been the Seminary Wives Institute here at Southern. I've taken some great classes like "Worldviews," "Old/New Testament Survey," and, currently, "Intro to Biblical Counseling," which is my favorite so far!
But lately, another thing has come into my life that makes me positively giddy with nerdy glee.
I joined a book club.
I've always talked about doing this but was kind of intimidated.
And then my friend from church, Andrea, invited me to her book club.
I LOVE IT.
We read "All Creatures Great and Small" by James Herriot for October, and now I've started "The Count of Monte Cristo" for Nov/Dec. (All 1250 pages of it!)
I was so inspired in the last meeting by how well-read these women are (especially you, Mrs. Cavanaugh!). Other than the few books/authors I have heard of through high school and college English classes, I just had no idea where to find good literature. I spent my days in the "Religious Fiction" section of the library...and although I love me some Francine Rivers, most of those authors leave much to be desired in the area of creativity.
Anyway, I'm so excited to have another way to learn and grow as a person, even without graduate school!

Book clubs are the best! I've been in one for 8.5 years now and I love it so much. Enjoy yours! Let me know how you like The Count of Monte Cristo. I haven't read that one yet.
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm so glad you've joined us!
ReplyDeleteI love James Herriot! The Count of Monte Cristo sounds fun!
ReplyDeleteDr. Blondie- I love it so far! I'm so surprised because I am NOT the type who is into prison escapes and treasure hunts...but it's so well-written I'm totally caught up in it.
ReplyDeleteTrina- You should join us! I'll forward the email on to you when we start our next book!
Reading! Yay! I'm so happy you've found a book club you like. It's a great way to figure out what's good, what is good but doesn't work of you, what's not good at all, etc, etc. Best of luck with your soon-to-be little one, and your current little one.
ReplyDeleteLots of love, Sarah
