I spent much of my evening peeling, cutting, and boiling. Why? To feed our 8-month-old son. I tell myself it's worth it because of all the money we're saving, but I will say that it's quite time-consuming.
Here's what I do. I buy tons of fresh produce, peel it all, cut it into chunks, boil it, and stick it in my Cuisinart food processor I got for 7 buckaroos at a yard sale. It is seriously huge; I always underestimate how much can fit in there. Then, I spoon the pureed produce into ice cube trays, cover them with cling wrap, and freeze them. Here is a shot of the bananas I made last week.
How much does he eat?
Breakfast: 3 cubes of fruit, 4 Tbsp. rice cereal
Lunch: 3 cubes of fruit, 3 cubes of veggies
Dinner: 3 cubes of veggies, 3 cubes of fruit, 3 Tbsp. rice cereal
Pictured here: avocados, peas, green beans, broccoli, sweet potatoes, spaghetti squash, eggplant, bananas, pears, apples, butternut squash, carrots, zucchini, corn, and strawberries. Very colorful, no? Appetizing? Maybe not.

To give you some context, that shot is of his high chair tray. And the vomit is covering the entire tray. As you can see, we're not talking about a little dribble. I'm always proud when I can get him to puke completely on the tray (as pictured here) and not have to change his clothes.
Sadly, he won't eat the green beans, peas, broccoli, corn, carrots, or strawberries right now, I think because of the texture (he always pukes when we try to feed him these items).
You already know about Silas' puking problem from this post. And you may even remember similar stories like this one from when he was teeny tiny. I think it's safe to say that Silas has unusual issues with his...digestive system? Gag reflex? Honestly, I'm not sure what causes all the projectile vomit.
He puked regularly from about 6 weeks to 9 weeks...a ticking time bomb, you never knew when he was going to blow. I thought he was totally over it, until one day when he was eating pears and the familiar red face and severe gagging began. And sure enough, out came the familiar projectile vomit, only this time in pretty colors. We thought there was a correlation between his puking and textures, so we cut out many of the foods I was processing for him...just can't get it smooth like Gerber. But he still throws up pretty consistently, about once every 3 days or so.
Here's a very lovely shot of Silas' bananas, cereal, and whatever else he was eating...hmm, looks kinda green...avocado perhaps? Zucchini?
All the doctors and nurses I've talked to don't seem concerned at all, but I really wish they could witness it happen and then tell me it's "normal." They said not to worry; lots of babies have issues with texture, and it's not something we need to push until Silas is 9 months.
Of course, I just can't quite leave it alone...I started re-introducing strawberries yesterday, and we're having success so far. (No puke, only a few gags.) And we tried giving him a couple of Cheerios last week...I thought maybe a completely different texture would be okay. The first one seemed to go down fine, but then the second one caused extreme gagging (Nathan was about ready to do the Heimlich) followed by...you guessed it...major barf.
Any tips on food processing and freezing? Anybody else's kids struggle with random puking and/or texture issues? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. :)
Hi Jessica.
ReplyDeleteSilas looks very well feeded, even though he seems to puke a lot. As long as he gets enough to be well grown. Maybe it is like the Docs say wait until he gets a little older. (Owen did some pukeing(?) too, because he just don't like some kind of food. Just keep an eye on how he is growing - he seems to still get enough of vitamins,...
Not much help, but a comment ;o)
Christin
I make food for Simeon, too! Although he's not up to eating that much yet, so I don't devote quite as much time to it.
ReplyDeleteSimeon hasn't had trouble with throwing up, but he does have some trouble digesting sometimes and then is in a lot of pain trying to poop.
Thanks for the encouragement, Christin! It's easy to freak out as a first-time mom, and I keep having to remind myself to relax...I just want to make sure I'm doing a good job as a mom. :)
ReplyDeleteDava- Have you started Simeon on any fruits? For Silas, that made a huge difference in his pooping ...He went 12 days without pooping one time! But now that he's getting like 4 servings of fruit a day, he's pooping at least once a day. Not saying you should rush it, just trying to give you hope. :)
Wow!! I was surprised to read how much he eats. How many oz bottles does he have along with that in a day? I make Raegan's food too, I actually enjoy it, weird I know! She won't eat green beans either! I feel like she isn't eating enough solids yet as I can usually barely get her to finish 1 cube at lunch and dinner?? Sometimes I wonder if I worry for nothing, she has rolls..so obviously she is getting enough food. I guess maybe kids are just different? No help on the barf issues, sorry.. she usually only pukes if I give her prunes or green beans, but seriously, can't blame her, they are kinda gross!!! :)
ReplyDeleteWay to go with the baby food-making! It saves so much money and it's nice knowing exactly what your kid is eating. Plus, I thought it was a relatively quick phase, Jack and Cullen are eating only table food now. So they only ate pureed food for about 4 months.
ReplyDeleteI remember you telling me about Silas' vomiting, but after seeing that picture, I'm blown away. I suppose that if he's growing at a healthy rate there's nothing too serious to worry about, but still... that is a ton of throw up. I don't think it would be bad to bring it up again at the doctor's (maybe show them the picture?), I probably would if it were one of my kids. But then again, Brandon always tells me I worry too much :-) I'll pray that he grows out of it though. Can't wait to see you in a few weeks!
Lindsay- Yeah, I think maybe he eats more than some babies...I don't give him bottles, so I really have no idea how much milk he's getting. I nurse him 4 times a day for about 20 minutes. I think every kid is different; if Raegan looks healthy I'm sure she is eating just the right amount!
ReplyDeleteKim- Thanks; it's encouraging to know there will be an end to the madness. :) I should have given you props for the ice cube tray/ziploc technique; after all, I never would have tried it had I not seen it in action. And Silas has a ped appointment in a few weeks; I think I'll bring in the pic if he's still throwing up. Just in case. :) Loving your blog and can't wait for another playdate next month!!!!
He hasn't started on many fruits yet (mostly just a little bit here and there when we're eating them), but they probably will help. Before starting solids, he would poop like 5 times a day, and now he usually only does once. It's excellent for diaper changes (especially since we use cloth). There have only been a few times when he's seemed in pain; usually he's doing okay.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to tell you, too, that this post inspired me to have a little puree party of my own! Not quite as wide-scale as yours, but now we'll have a slightly more stocked freezer for Sim.
I made a lot of Jerek's food when he was Silas' age. I did the same thing, had a big ta-do at my mom's every week. . . .
ReplyDeleteOne way to thin out the food is to add a lot of the left over water from boiling the food. Not only does it thin out the mixture, it adds back some of the nutrients lost when boiled.
When Jerek wouldn't eat a specific food, I would mix a little in with a big bite of something he did like. Most of the time it worked. Just make sure to keep trying to give the rejected foods second, third, and fourth chances, Silas may change his mind. Although a week later it may change back :-)
Can't give much advice on the projectile vomiting. Jerek was really good about that; he didn't even spit-up until he was 4 months old.
I did have one question, your pedi is allowing you to give him strawberries? That was a no-no for us until 12 months, funny how everyone is a little different. . . .
