a sad day

Silas just keeps getting cuter. Smiles are getting more and more abundant, and he just wow-ed us last night by sleeping almost 10 hours. We had a pediatrician appointment yesterday, and it was a rough couple of hours…

First, I carried Silas into the building and waited for the elevator. We were already late, because I couldn’t remember how to get there. While waiting, Silas proceeded to throw up everything in his little stomach onto himself, the tile floor, and me. He hadn’t thrown up like that for several days, so I was very surprised. I had to whip out his diaper-changing pad and attempt to clean everything up with wipes…then I dressed him in his backup onesie.

Finally, we made it to the office. I told the receptionist to send someone with a mop to the lobby. We didn’t have to wait for long, which was great. Silas charmed the nurse with his smiles. He weighed in at 11 lbs. 15 oz. Hooray! This moved him up to the 55th percentile for weight. He measured 23 ½ inches long, which put him in the 70th percentile for height. Mom, I guess I’m taking after you by producing long, skinny babies! All of this was going just great. The doctor was pleased with Silas’ progress (and graced with more smiles) and then sent in the nurse for his shots. Well, the nurse first gave him an immunization orally. I don’t know if that is what triggered him, but he soon puked another massive amount, soaking through his second outfit, blanket, and burp rag. I literally had NOTHING left to put on him, and I wound up having to take him out of the office dressed in just a diaper! I was so embarrassed; I’m sure people probably thought I was a very irresponsible mother. I was just thankful it was 83 degrees outside and not the dead of winter!!

And then came the shots. Poor little guy! It was so hard for me to stand there and watch his look of surprise turn quickly to crimson, wrinkled, angry scream face. I choked back my tears and tried to be strong for my boy. Thankfully, he soon calmed down, and just gave me a very pathetic expression, with his lower lip sticking out and trembling a little. Last evening was pretty fussy, only wanting to be held and screaming every time he remembered his pain. The Tylenol finally kicked in, though, and eventually he was peacefully sleeping…his favorite thing. J This morning he is back to his sweet self.

Yawn.

We attempted a trip to Starbucks. Three weeks ago this would not have been difficult, but Silas' is becoming less portable and is waking up more easily as we try to transport him during naps, especially in the car seat. And since he is on a schedule where he eats right after he wakes up, what do you think is the first thing on his mind when he wakes up early from a nap? Nathan is trying to multitask here.

The next three are sort of a progression...I was trying to capture Silas' smiling session.

Below are some more videos. I realize that most of you will find them quite boring, but I also know there are a select few who will absolutely devour them.

  1. Jessica - the throwing up after the oral vax was probably b/c they gave him the rota virus vax. As far as I know, that is the only one they routinely give orally, and it is normal for the baby to automatically puke it all back up. Makes you wonder how vaccinated against it they really are then . . . Watch the crying, if he screams inconsolably for more then 3 hours, call the doc. Other then that, he'll just be grumpy and fussy. It is a rough thing to watch as a Mommy!!

Silas is so adorable, it has been fun watching he get bigger, even if it is via the internet. I'm praying for God's wisdom, grace, and patience for you as you move and get ready for another phase of life!
