I am not the world's greatest homemaker.
I was reminded of this fact last week, when I made a disgusting discovery...
A couple of weeks ago, some mysterious stains appeared in the laundry. A washcloth, a burp rag, and one of Silas' shirts were covered in deep blue-black stains. I quizzed my husband to no avail, sure that he had thrown in some oily rag or greasy shirt that had transferred onto these other garments. I treated the stains with Oxy-Clean and rewashed, only to find that the stains were a stubborn match for my otherwise-reliable stain fighter. Frustrated, I added the washcloth and burp rag to my cleaning bucket and stowed away Silas' shirt in my craft box, hoping that when I someday learn to sew I can use the fabric for something else.
Yesterday, I found a burp rag that we had accidentally left in the car overnight. It, too, was covered with these mysterious blue-black stains.
A sinking feeling made my jaw drop with horror.
"Nathan. This is mold."
Apparently it is a good idea to immediately rinse out cloths and clothes that have been covered in cow's milk. Because I only launder once a week, I had let those things sit too long in the hamper...This was never a problem with breastmilk (why? no idea) so I never gave it a thought.
Needless to say, I will be a religious rinser from here on out.
Someone else please tell me this has happened to you. :)

This has not happened to me YET... but it probably would've if I hadn't read this!! I wouldn't have even thought about it, since, like you said, it wasn't a problem with breastmilk. And although I haven't discovered mold on clothes yet, I unfortunately discover mold on food way too often!
ReplyDeleteThat's totally happened to us! I use one washcloth a day to clean the boys off after meals. I just keep rinsing and reusing it. Then at the end of the day, I would throw it into the hamper. The first few days I did this, though, the washcloths grew mold on them and spread the mold to other clothes and blankets in the hamper too! It was really gross and some of our rags and bibs still have mold spots on them... So now, I wring out the washcloth after the last meal of the day and let it air-dry on the back of the highchair and then throw it in the hamper the next morning. No more mold here!
ReplyDeleteoh man, kim...i seriously feel so much better! letting it air dry on the high chair is a great plan; i will implement it immediately.
ReplyDeleteand dava, glad i could save you from the embarassment of moldy laundry. :)
Wow! I kept wondering why the washcloths I use to wipe off Megan after she eats get blue spots on them since none of her food is blue! Oh dear - I guess I'll be air-drying the washcloths between each use, too. Thanks for figuring that out for me. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Jess, I'm surprised that this hasn't happened to us yet. I had no idea that this could happen. I am glad to know now. Thanks for the heads-up. By the way, from what I've observed, you are a wonderful homemaker. ;-)
