waiting...

We decided that a blog might be the best way for family and friends to keep up with what's going on in our lives, especially as we anticipate the soon arrival of Baby Lugbill. So here goes...

We are 3 weeks and 3 days away from the due date. This pregnancy has been fun for both of us, and we are so thankful that I (Jess) have been feeling so well for almost all of it. The baby has been right on track with normal and healthy development, according to the doctors. We did have a scare of pyelectasis during our second sonogram. This basically meant that the baby's urethral tubes (leading from bladder to kidneys) were fuller with fluid than they should have been. This is a very common problem with boys especially, and we were told that it would probably resolve itself. At our last sonogram about a month ago, the baby's fluid levels were in the normal range, and we are praising the Lord that he will not have to have any kind of medication or minor surgery after he is born. At my last appointment, the midwife told me the baby will be a "beautiful size." I asked her if that was just a nice way of saying big, but she said no, he will be just where they want him. I am hopeful that maybe this means we will not have a ten pounder. :) It has been fun throughout the pregnancy for Nathan and I to read about how the baby has developed week by week, and we are constantly amazed at the Lord's creativity.

I am feeling very well at this point. I have LOTS of energy during the day, but I can sometimes be deceived into thinking it's okay to do more than I should. I do get sore/tired quickly when physically active, and I stopped running about two months ago. Now my exercise consists of fast walks around the neighborhood with a friend. I have been sleeping okay, but I wake up often and get sore and uncomfortable during the night. I am usually able to go back to sleep quickly, though, which has been a blessing! Of course, there is the generally "large" feeling that accompanies gaining 35 pounds (yes, I have already gained that much) almost solely in the abdominal area. I am thankful that I haven't blown up like a balloon, and Nathan says no one can tell from the back that I am pregnant. However, I have been getting asked by strangers if I'm due any day for about a month now, and earlier this week the mailman asked me if I'm having twins. :) Overall, I really like being pregnant and am not yet too anxious for it to be over.

Nathan has been incredibly supportive and helpful throughout this time. He is very protective (in a good way!) and often reprimands me for trying to do too much. He cleans for me often and has taken over any carrying of groceries or laundry. Nathan loves feeling the baby move and has been very affirming and encouraging as my physique has changed drastically. :) I quit working at the end of January, and it has been fun for me to be a full-time wife for a few weeks. Nathan loves it too; he says he feels like we're both on vacation right now. It has been great for us to spend lots of time together in the evenings. We took a "babymoon" trip to Annapolis for a couple of nights. This was a great time for us to relax together and focus on our marriage. We are praying that the Lord would help us to continue to prioritize our relationship after Junior arrives.

A few weeks ago, a couple from our church whose due date was AFTER ours had their baby. This seemed to kick Nathan into high gear, and he has been working nonstop on projects for the baby ever since. The Pack 'N Play (baby's bed for the first 4 months) has been set up, and Nathan is currently working on sanding down and painting a wood cabinet that will hold much of the baby's "stuff". I did Baby's laundry and have washed all his toys, organizing everything as best I can with our limited space. (For those who might not know this, we live in a one-bedroom apartment right now. The baby will be sleeping in the living room for the first 4 months of his life. Although this is obviously not ideal, we are cheerful and optimistic that it will be fine for such a short time. We will be moving to Louisville for Nathan to attend Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in July, and at that point we will finally have a nursery. Side note: Nathan was officially accepted to Southern this week!) This weekend we hope to pick up our stroller and install the car seat. I've noticed that for Nathan especially, these physical preparations make it seem very real and exciting!

We had our hospital tour last Saturday. This was really fun! We are going with a Physician & Midwife Practice, and our baby will be born in Inova Alexandria Hospital in Virginia. I have really appreciated the practice; they are very laid back about everything and encourage us to make decisions that are right for our family. A midwife will catch the baby unless there is a complication, in which case a doctor will do it. I am thinking at this point that I will probably do an epidural, but my goal is to make it to 5 cm dilation first.

Well, I can't think of anything else interesting to report. We will keep you posted throughout this process and will post pictures as soon after the baby's birth as we can! Please pray that things will go smoothly and that these last few weeks would be sweet as we prepare to be parents.
Below is a progression of the baby bump. Sorry some of the pictures are so small! This first one is me at 16 weeks...
