i don't like chocolate.

Never ever thought I would say that. I have (had?) a major sweet tooth, and chocolate has always brought me great delight and joy...Nothing was ever too rich for me.

Until August.

Silas was born in April, and for some reason, in August my tastebuds completely changed.

I don't hate chocolate in all its forms. I still like fudge, but not as much as I used to. I like oreos. But I don't enjoy brownies, M&M's, chocolate chips, hershey kisses...

Other things I used to love but now hate:
peanut butter
diet coke

It's so weird, because it's not like I just decided, "I don't like this anymore," things actually TASTE DIFFERENT. I thought the peanut butter I was eating must have been an off-brand and discovered it was my favorite creamy Jif, not even reduced fat. For weeks, I told everyone their Diet Coke must be expired because it tasted horrible.

And my former favorite combination, chocolate AND peanut butter is, predictably, no longer enjoyable. Goodbye, Reese's peanut butter cups. Goodbye, buckeyes (Ohioans know what I'm talking about). Goodbye, Scotcharoos. Goodbye, Great-Grandma Meredith's chocolate/PB/Ritz cookies she makes every Christmas...

I feel like I'm in mourning.

My sense of smell is also distorted...After smelling something strong, it seems like everything smells like it for weeks, or even months.

After dyeing my hair, everything smelled like hair dye.

After eating a yucky version of jambalaya at a restaurant, everything smelled like jambalaya.

After eating KFC and getting sick, everything smelled like KFC (and still does, actually).

Is it hormonal? Is it normal? Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? More importantly, will I ever regain my love for chocolate?!?

The good news is, my hair is no longer falling out. So now I have all these weird one-inch-long hairs by my part that stick straight up. Fantastic.

  1. Yes!! The exact thing happened to me! For me, macaroni and cheese, Little Ceasar's pizza, Pepsi, and some ice cream flavors taste completely different than they used to. Also, I made a crockpot dish which calls for ground beef while I was pregnant. When I was browning the beef, I got sick from the smell. Ever since, that dish tastes like raw meat to me. :) I wonder if our bodies ever return to anything close to that pre-pregnancy state.

  2. Ah, thank you, Amy! I feel better knowing I'm not alone. I don't know which is worse, an aversion to pizza or to chocolate! I'm still holding out hope that maybe weaning Silas will bring about hormonal changes and, therefore, tastebud changes. :) And if not, maybe getting pregnant again will do the trick!

  3. Oh, sad! I love buckeyes :( Do you like any diet sodas or do the all taste funny?

  5. Jessica, Megan's only 3 months old so I'm hoping things will get a little better when I stop nursing her, too. I have also wondered what my body will do with the next pregnancy. It would be great if another pregnancy just bounced everything back to normal! :)
